Human and Social Development

Our students will study personal and human social skills and as they relate to students' identity in the world - both as individuals and as members of their community. We are learning that personal and human social skills encompass the abilities students needs to thrive as individuals, to understand and care about themselves and others, and to find and achieve their purposes in the world.

Goals

  • Improve student sense of well-being.

At Chief Dan George Middle, we began the year with a school-wide Social Emotional Fall Survey. Every student answered 20 questions. The survey gave us a baseline for student sense of belonging, connection, as well as self and social awareness. Results showed there was a powerful adult connection to one/more of our staff, as well majority of students felt they belonged at CDGM. The survey highlighted two areas of growth:

  • Student ability to treating others with care and respect at all times.

  • Student ability to noticing their emotions early and choose helpful strategies to manage them.

The video below is an example of specific action we are taking to address these areas of growth. This is our Grade 8 Madame Perron's  “Community Block.” The Community block is held weekly with the goal to to build teamwork, community, and personal growth. Within the block students reflect on their actions and try small challenges outside their comfort zone. They support one another and strengthen the culture of care in every class.
